Since the release of the Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Book, Microsoft has been working to overcome reports of screen flicker related to running Hyper-V virtual machines and display driver crashes. However, in a staff response on Microsoft Community a short time ago, the company foreshadowed an imminent release of updated drivers to help correct these issues which are now available via Windows Update.
This firmware update for both devices will be called either "System Hardware Update - 12/3/2015" or “System Firmware Update – 12/3/2015” and will include the following components:
-
HD Graphics 520 driver update (v20.19.15.4326) improves display stability
-
Surface Display Calibration driver update (v1.1.381.0) supports compatibility with the updated graphics driver
According to another thread in Microsoft Community, Surface updates are delivered in stages so your device may not be immediately offered the update. If this happens, you can manually check again later or wait for your computer to download and install it automatically.
Hopefully, Microsoft has managed to nail these problems once and for all to avoid further firmware updates similar to prolonged WiFi issues on its Surface Pro 3. If your Surface Book or Surface Pro 4 has been offered these updates, be sure to share your experience in the comments section.
