Microsoft releases Windows 10 SDK Preview build 16257 and Mobile Emulator build 15235 [Update]

A couple of weeks ago, Microsoft announced that the Windows 10 SDK for the Fall Creators Update is now platform-complete. That doesn"t mean that the company is done offering new preview builds though, as today it released SDK Preview build 16257 to Insiders.

Interestingly, this aligns with the latest Windows 10 build in the Fast ring, which is odd since it usually coincides with the Slow ring build number, which is 16251. In fact, ISOs for 16251 were also released today.

Alongside the SDK Preview is a new Mobile Emulator Insider Preview, which doesn"t align with the Fast or Slow rings, which are currently 15237 and 15230, respectively. As always, these are only supported by Visual Studio 2017.

Unfortunately, there are no release notes just yet for the new SDK. You can download it here, but if you click on the "release notes" link at the current time, it will redirect you to download a PDF that includes the changelog for Windows 10 SDK Preview build 16232.

Update: Microsoft has finally announced the new SDK, and there are a few known issues to be aware of:

  • Designer fails to render: When viewing the XAML in the Designer Window in Visual Studio, the controls fail to render. This can be resolved by using Visual Studio 2017.3 Preview.

  • Compilation fails on non-Windows 10 platforms (need to see if fixed)
When building apps on previous platforms, you may get a build error:
C:\program files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\bin\10.0.16232.0\x86\genxbf.dll:C:\program files (x860\Windows Kits\10\bin\10.0.16232.0\x86\genxbf.dll(0,0): Error WMC0621: Cannot resolve ‘GenXbf.dll’ under path ‘C:\program files (x860\Windows Kits\10\bin\10.0.16232.0\x86\genxbf.dll’. Please install the latest version of the Windows 10 Software Development Kit.
Process ‘msbuild.exe’ exited with code ‘1’.

  • WRL projects fail to compile with MIDLRT error: When building my WRL project that contains a WinRT Component, the project no longer compiles. I get the following errors:
