Microsoft releases Windows 8/RT compatible logo guidelines

In June, Internet sources leaked the first images of the compatibility logos that hardware and software makers could user for Windows 8 and Windows RT-based products. At the time, Microsoft would not confirm that these logo were genuine. Now the company has officially revealed those logos, along with the guidelines that companies must follow in order to have these images on their products.

In a post on the company"s Dev Center site, Microsoft has already given the go-ahead for companies to place these logos on the physical packages of products. However, they cannot use the logos online, for point-of-sale marketing or in print advertisements until September 1.

In terms of displaying the logo, Microsoft says:

You may change its size, as long as the minimum width is 12.7 mm. The logo may not be altered in any other manner, including proportions, colors, visual elements, and any other way. The logo may not be animated, morphed, or otherwise distorted in perspective or dimensional appearance.

There are a number of other requirements listed on the page, including word that companies cannot abbreviate Windows 8 as Win, Win8, or W8. As far as Windows 8-based apps, Microsoft says, "Do not call apps that work with Windows 8 "Windows 8 apps." Instead, call them "apps for Windows 8" or "apps that work with Windows 8."

Companies can use the term "Windows 8 Compatible" when describing their products but not "Windows 8 Certified."
