Microsoft continues its game console sales dominance here in the US, compared to Sony and Nintendo. This week Microsoft announced that it sold 438,000 units of its Xbox 360 console in September in the US, according to data from the NPD Group. It"s the seventh consecutive month that the Xbox 360 lead in sales of game console hardware in the US. The total revenue number for Xbox 360 games, consoles and peripherals in September came in at $534 million in September, which Microsoft said was two times the amount of its nearest competitor.
IndustryGamers reports that that overall, the total amount of retail console game revenue in the US came in at $1.16 billion for September 2011. The NPD Group says those numbers were slightly below September 2010"s $1.23 billion sale numbers. Madden NFL 12 was the best selling game last month, but Gears of War 3, the exclusive Xbox 360 shooter from Epic Games, came in at number two for the month. Third place went to Dead Island, the surprise hit zombie action game from developer Techland and publisher Deep Silver.
Sony also released its own sales information for September 2011. While it didn"t give specific unit sale numbers, Sony said that Playstation 3 hardware sales went up 20 percent during that month and that PS3 software sales went up 52 percent. Part of the reason for the rise was due to sales of the PS3 exclusive sci-fi shooter Resistance 3, which came in sixth in game software sales for the month.
