Last week, we reported that the Microsoft Store website was showing that all but one model of the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets were out of stock; a situation that had persisted for several weeks. This weekend, Microsoft finally got some new Surface 2 units for sale, which may signal better availability of the tablets in the future.
The site shows that both the 32GB and 64GB Surface 2 models are now available for purchase on the site. In addition, it also shows the 64GB Surface Pro 2 is back on sale alongside the 512GB model. However, both the 128GB and the 256GB Surface Pro 2 are still listed as out of stock, as is the 32GB model of the original Surface RT tablet.
Microsoft has not offered a direct comment on why they were unable to keep up with the demand for the new Surface tablets for the past several weeks, which included most of the holiday shopping period of 2013. The company"s only statement on the matter said, "We’re actively working with our manufacturing teams and retail partners to get Surface in customers’ hands as soon as possible." Microsoft is scheduled to reveal its fourth quarter 2013 financial number on Thursday and hopefully we will get some information about sales of the new Surface models at that time.
