Microsoft: Tablets to outsell PC desktops in 2013

Could the sales of tablets surpass desktop PCs by the end of 2013? That"s the prediction from Antoine Leblond, the head of Windows Web Services at Microsoft. Speaking during the keynote address at Microsoft"s annual TechEd Europe conference, Leblond said, "Everything used to be desktops, now 60 percent of PCs sold are laptops. Next year, tablets will outsell desktops."

Leblond seemed to suggest that the launch of Windows 8 will help make that scenario happen, thanks to the introduction of more tablets that will run on Windows 8 as well as Windows RT. Those tablet sales will come from various third party companies as well as Microsoft itself, which announced its Surface Windows 8/RT tablet last week.

Leblond did say that Windows 8 is not just for tablets, stating, " ... it"s still Windows. Everything you could do before, you can still do in Windows 8." He added, "You don"t have to compromise. It works equally well in a managed or an unmanaged environment, or a mixed environment."

During the keynote speech, Leblond also demonstrated a number of Windows 8 Metro apps that were made specially for the European market. That included showing off a Vodafone Metro app along with an app made for UK National Rai.
