Microsoft has been increasingly concerned about the rising popularity of Chromebooks, at least in closed organisations like schools and businesses, where their low price and the relative safety of a closed-off ecosystem present huge advantages over a Windows PC.
The company has been taking aim at Google"s Chromebooks for a few years now and has once again released two new ads touting the superiority of Windows over Chromebooks for use in schools and businesses.
The first ad, which is aimed at business users, claims the Windows experience is "nothing short of superior" when compared to Google"s OS, with features like Windows Ink, Windows Hello, Cortana and Microsoft Edge being on display. Of course, a comparison between Windows and Chrome OS wouldn"t be complete without a mention of Windows vastly superior library of available x86 apps and the relative flexibility of the ecosystem, which is what Microsoft closes with.
For students and teachers, the pitch is mostly the same. Microsoft also highlights Sway, its supplementary presentation software as a powerful tool for sharing ideas and making learning easier. Inking makes another appearance here, alongside the extra security by provided Windows Hello, two-factor authorisation and encryption.
Ironically, neither of the ads mentions Windows 10 S, the new OS from Microsoft that the company itself claims is designed for education, which seems like a missed opportunity for Microsoft to advertise a new platform that many are comparing to its doomed Windows RT.
