Windows 10 is rolling out today to millions of PCs around the world, and variants of the OS will eventually make their way to many more devices, including smart displays, set-top boxes, Internet of Things devices, micro-PCs, and even Microsoft"s Xbox One console.
But while Windows 10 Mobile previews have been available for Windows phones for many months, the smartphone OS remains in development for now - in fact, a Microsoft executive let slip today that Windows 10 Mobile isn"t expected to arrive until November. But despite this, it appears that the smartphone OS isn"t going to get much more in the way of new features before its launch.
Indeed, Microsoft"s Joe Belfiore said as much to The Verge: "The phone is significantly feature complete," he said, "but we"ll continue to polish and tweak and iterate the things that still need to work."
It seems unlikely, then, that many more bells and whistles will be added to the OS compared with the most recent Insider Preview release of Windows 10 Mobile - build 10166, which rolled out three weeks ago.
However, the OS hasn"t been completely locked down yet - Belfiore said that the company will continue to "put features in right up near the end. But," he added, "in general, the broad feature set is set."
So it sounds like any new additions to Windows 10 Mobile between now and its rollout will be limited only to minor new features, rather than anything to get too excited about. But Microsoft appears keen to leave itself plenty of time to add that all-important polish and stability to the OS before it"s released, and that"s no bad thing.
And it"s worth bearing mind that, as with Windows 10 for PCs, Microsoft will continue to regularly update its smartphones with new features after Windows 10 Mobile has launched - indeed, it has promised to do so far more frequently than ever before.
