Microsoft has spoken extensively about its plans for Windows 10 on PCs and tablets, but what is not yet completely clear is exactly what the phone side of things will look like. We"ve known for a while that Microsoft plans to consolidate Windows RT and Windows Phone into a single unified OS that"s basically Windows 10 under the hood, but Microsoft isn"t expected to reveal more on this until next year.
But today, someone at the company let the cat out of the bag. The official @Lumia Twitter account for Microsoft"s handsets tweeted that "there will be Windows 10 upgrades for all Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices", adding that - to the surprise of no-one - there will be new handsets running Windows 10 in the future.
It"s worth noting that the tweet refers to future handsets not as running "Windows Phone 10", but rather as "new Windows 10 models", which lines up with what we"ve heard previously about Microsoft"s plans to phase out the Windows Phone brand.
The tweet will no doubt come as a relief to owners of Windows Phone 8.x-generation Lumia handsets, who have now been assured that their devices will be updated. The last time Microsoft made such a significant change to its mobile OS was when it launched Windows Phone 8 - and that time around, it failed to offer an upgrade path for Windows Phone 7.x handsets.
