Microsoft to expand its cloud reach with new data centers in India

Microsoft has announced that they will be building new data centers in India to create a local footprint for the software giant in the world"s second most populated country. India, which is only second in population to China, has about 1.2 billion citizens.

India is an emerging economy and their services are growing in influence each year in the tech industry. What was once considered only a location for outsourcing, the country is turning into a tech center with significant potential for entrepreneurs to start companies and even Microsoft"s CEO is from that part of the world.

“Microsoft’s cloud services in India have grown over 100 percent in revenue in the past year,” the company said in a statement. “Microsoft’s locally available cloud services will open opportunities for banking, financial services, and insurance companies, state-owned enterprises and government departments.”

The exact location of the new data center was not stated but considering that these build outs are typically full of the latest gear, it will be a small boost to the local economy wherever Microsoft chooses to open up its next Azure location.  It"s unclear whether the company will continue their roofless datacenter builds, or if the process has changed.

The cloud is a key component of Microsoft"s "Cloud first, mobile first" strategy and to make sure that it has the best services, no matter where you live, look for the company to aggressively expand its infrastructure.
