Earlier this week, Microsoft hosted an event in New York City, at which it unveiled its new Surface Studio all-in-one PC and Surface Dial interaction device, along with a new Surface-branded mouse and keyboards, as well as revealing details of the upcoming Windows 10 Creators Update.
It also announced that it has been working with various major hardware partners - including Dell, HP and Lenovo - to bring new low-cost mixed-reality headsets to market, through its Windows Holographic platform. These new headsets, it said, will cost as little as $299.
But aside from a short on-stage demo at the event, Microsoft didn"t say a great deal about its partners" plans to make VR more affordable - but we won"t have to wait too long to find out more.
Microsoft Technical Fellow Alex Kipman told Polygon that more details will be shared about the new Windows Holographic VR headsets at an event in December. Among the information revealed there, we should get some details about specifications, including display resolution and field of view.
Microsoft originally announced its plans to open up the Windows Holographic platform to its partners in June, and said that new third-party headsets would become available "in months, not years". In August, it revealed that it will bring the Windows Holographic shell to all Windows 10 PCs in its next major update, now known as the Creators Update.
The first third-party Windows Holographic headsets will arrive alongside the Creators Update in Spring 2017, with further devices being released throughout the rest of the year.
