Microsoft tries to woo former MobileMe users with 15GB of extra free SkyDrive space

A few days ago, we reported that Apple would not be extending the deadline for its former MobileMe users to access up to 50GB of free space on its iCloud service. The free space offer finally ends on Sept. 30 and once that happens, those ex-MobileMe subscribers will find their free space cut down to just 5 GB on iCloud, although they have the option of purchasing more space.

Now Microsoft is using this opportunity to entice those former MobileMe users to dump iCloud entirely and come on over to Microsoft"s SkyDrive service. In a post today on the official SkyDrive account, Microsoft stated:

Did Apple cancel your extra MobileMe storage? Fwd the downgrade email to HelpMeSkyDrive@outlook.com for an extra 15GB of SkyDrive for 1 year

— SkyDrive (@SkyDrive) August 7, 2013

We assume that "extra" 15 GB means that MobileMe users will get that amount of storage on top of the free 7GB of space that Microsoft gives all SkyDrive users. That means MobileMe users will actually get access to 22 GB of free SkyDrive space for one year.

This interesting attempt at taking some of Apple"s customers away comes as Microsoft also has to come up with an all new name for SkyDrive, after losing a trademark battle with BSkyB last week over the brand.
