Nokia is well known for its unique social and guerilla marketing techniques, and despite the company"s smartphone division now being part of Microsoft, that hasn"t changed. One of the Lumia line"s biggest rivals has been Samsung, and last week the Microsoft division took its competitor"s new marketing campaign at London Heathrow Airport head-on.
In a post on the Nokia Conversations blog, the Microsoft subsidiary says it was inspired by the recent branding of the London airport"s fifth terminal as "Terminal Samsung Galaxy S5" and decided to send some "Lumianauts" there to try and explore the "stellar opportunity."
"Once the brave Lumianauts stepped foot in to the brand new terminal, though, they quickly learned that there was no such thing as a flight to ‘the Galaxy,’" the post states. "Rather, the terminal had taken over by advertising for another mobile phone company."
The move is the Microsoft unit"s most recent barrage against the Galaxy line, following incidents where it positioned Lumia-branded trucks in front of Samsung Galaxy billboards. Another competitor has received the most ire from Microsoft, however: Apple. In September, both Microsoft and Nokia poked fun at the then-new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c in tweets. Previously, Nokia executives also mocked HTC"s use of color in its smartphones, saying it was an attempt to copy the Lumia"s signature style.
