Microsoft UK slashes Lumia 640 XL price by 27%, now available for £159.99

Amazon has reduced the price of the Lumia 640 to just £99.99 in the UK, but the Microsoft Store has now slashed a big chunk off the cost of its supersized sibling, the Lumia 640 XL. Microsoft launched the 640 XL last year, and even at its regular UK price of £219 SIM-free, we found that there was a lot to like about the device when we reviewed it.

Today, Microsoft cut £59.01 - just under 27% - off the price of the handset, bringing it down to £159.99. The Lumia 640 XL"s key specs include:

  • 5.7-inch ClearBlack IPS LCD with HD (1280x720px) resolution and Corning Gorilla Glass 3
  • Quad-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB onboard storage (plus microSD support up to 128GB)
  • Backside illuminated 13MP rear camera with ZEISS optics, LED flash and 1080p video recording
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • NFC
  • 4G LTE connectivity
  • Ambient light sensor, accelerometer, proximity sensor, magnetometer and SensorCore
  • Replaceable 3000mAh battery
  • 157.9 x 81.5 x 9mm; 171g

Significantly, this isn"t a short-term promotion, lasting only a few days, or even a few weeks - the small print on the Store site notes that the offer will be available until 30 June 2016, or "while supplies last".

Such a lengthy period of availability for a "special offer" - over five months - suggests that Microsoft is now clearing out stocks of the Lumia 640 XL, just nine months after it first went on sale in the UK.
