Microsoft has released a new version of Skype for iPhone and iPad, bumping the version number up to 6.25. The company says that this latest update "takes the best new features of iOS 10 and integrates them into the Skype experience."
Apple released iOS 10 earlier this month, and delivered the bug-fixing 10.0.2 update to its mobile devices last week.
The most significant new addition in the new Skype release is the ability to start a call using voice commands through Siri, as Microsoft explained:
Let’s say you’re trying to call Lucy Archer on Skype. If you have her Skype contact information saved in your iOS device, simply say “Call Lucy Archer.” Siri may ask for you to confirm it has the right contact—one click later and your Skype call is initiated!
This functionality will also be available in the Skype for Business app on iOS next month.
Deeper Skype integration into the OS using Apple"s CallKit tools means you can now start a Skype video call, audio call or instant messaging chat directly from your iOS contacts, without needing to open the app first. Incoming Skype calls will now appear "just like regular calls".
Skype for Business users on iOS can expect to get this functionality at some point in October too.
