Earlier this week, Microsoft rolled out its latest Windows 10 Mobile preview, build 10536 - but the journey to its release was certainly eventful. The build was supposed to be released last week, but it was halted when a show-stopping bug was discovered at the last minute, although around 200 handsets were able to install the problematic build before its rollout was suspended.
This week"s release of the revised build 10536.1004 hasn"t been perfect either - this time around, an unknown number of handsets were able to install the new Windows 10 Mobile build despite not even being supported on the Insider Preview program.
At the time, Microsoft"s Gabe Aul advised users not to install the new build if the prompt appeared on an unsupported device:
While Microsoft"s Lumia range is supported on the Insider program, the only non-Lumia handset with official support for Windows 10 Mobile builds is the HTC One M8. But despite this, some non-Lumia devices - including the older HTC Windows Phone 8X and various BLU handsets, among others - were able to detect 10536.1004 as available for their devices, and some users went ahead with installation.
Unfortunately, as Aul predicted, that"s created some problems for those who installed the latest build on those unsupported devices. But today, he offered some hope for anyone in that situation:
The good news here, clearly, is that Microsoft is taking the problem seriously, with a dedicated team "working on repair options" for these devices. The bad news, of course, is that there"s not even a hint of when a fix will arrive.
Meanwhile, the company is continuing development work on Windows 10 Mobile ahead of its official launch in a few weeks" time. The latest build currently in testing on Microsoft"s internal Fast ring is 10547, which appears to be a possible candidate for release as the next Insider Preview.
