Last week, Microsoft announced a collaboration with Atari to bring a number of classic arcade games to web browsers, particularly Internet Explorer. Today, Microsoft announced yet another website collaboration but of a very different sort.
In a post on the official Internet Explorer blog, Microsoft revealed it is working with the musical group The xx to help promote the group"s upcoming album Coexist. The website itself is the only way people can listen to the album"s tracks before its official launch on September 11th.
The site was built in HTML5 and Microsoft says it has a number of special features, particularly for people who use Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8. The blog says:
With The xx, it was about blending music, art, and technology - creating beauty in simplicity. When you land on the page, you’ll notice an incredible visualization of how the album Coexist was shared from just a single person. By using your mouse (or finger) to move the time slider up and down on the right of the map, you can interact with the visualization to see how the experience was shared over time.
The slider on the Coexist page will continue to track how the music is being shared around the world before the album itself is launched in eight days.
