Microsoft: Xbox 360 consoles sales down; Skype use is up

As part of its fourth quarter 2012 financial announcements, Microsoft revealed some new information on two aspects of its Entertainment and Devices division, which has both the Xbox 360 and Skype business.

In terms of the Xbox 360, Microsoft admitted that it sold 5.9 million consoles during the very busy holiday sales quarter. However, that number was down 28 percent from the same period a year ago, when the company sold 8.2 million. Microsoft also said that its launch of its in-house Xbox 360 game Halo 4 was the "best-selling title" of the Halo series but did not reveal specific sales figures.

As expected, Microsoft did not mention any plans for launching a successor for the Xbox 360, although there are plenty of rumors that the company does plan to release such a product by the end of 2013.

In terms of Skype, Microsoft said that the number of minutes by users of its VoIP service went up 59 percent during the quarter, with a total of 138 billion minutes. Microsoft did not give any information on how much revenue the Skype division generated

The Entertainment and Devices division also has the Windows Phone business, but Microsoft did not give any new information on the status of that division, other than repeating that sales of Windows Phone products are up four times their amount from a year ago,
