With about two months to go before the Xbox One is supposed to launch in the U.S. and other countries, a Microsoft Xbox executive confirmed today that not only is the company"s next-generation game console in full production, the hardware inside the case got a final performance boost.
According to GeekWire, Microsoft Xbox chief marketing officer Yusef Mehdi revealed at the Citi Global Technology Conference that the Xbox One has received one final CPU speed boost, going up from 1.60 GHz to 1.75 GHz. Last month, Microsoft announced that the GPU inside the console has received a performance increase from 800 MHz to 853 Mhz.
Microsoft is using hardware co-designed by the company with AMD that includes the CPU, GPU and more on one chip. On paper, Sony"s PlayStation 4 is supposed to be faster than the Xbox One but it looks like Microsoft was able to squeeze in some extra clock speed adjustments in the system before the first retail units started production.
Microsoft has not revealed a final launch date for the Xbox One beyond "November," and Mehdi did not offer up any further info on that subject today. He also didn"t reveal just how many Xbox One units will be ready for the launch, saying only, "This will be the biggest launch we"ve ever done by a wide margin in terms of units shipped at launch."
