Microsoft's ads for Surface, Windows 8 and more boost overall tech ad spending

Microsoft has been going all out in producing new television and print ads to show off new products like Windows 8, its Surface tablets and the lineup of Windows Phone 8 devices. This week, a new report says that Microsoft"s efforts helped to boost ad spending in the tech industry overall in the first quarter of 2013.

PCWorld reports that, according to a new study by Nielson, technology companies spentĀ $723 million in ads in the US for the first quarter, up 30 percent compared to the same period a year ago. Microsoft"s ad spending went up by a massive 200 percent compared to a year ago, thanks largely to the fact that in 2012, it didn"t spend as much because it was winding down its Windows 7 promotions.

However, Microsoft still managed to spend more in that time period than the usual tech ad leader in the first quarter: Intuit. Yes, the maker of TurboTax and Quicken software spends a ton of money on advertising in that time of the year thanks to people wanting to get a quick and easy way to take care of their taxes.

This year, Microsoft lead the way thanks to lots of ads for Windows 8 along with its impressive looking Surface Pro commercials. Lately, Microsoft has been taking the fight to its rival Apple, showing how Windows 8 tablets are "better" than the iPad in a series of TV ads.
