Microsoft's goal is 1 billion Windows 10 devices in 2-3 years

Microsoft"s Build 2015 keynote has been packed with information and the company is going all-in on Windows 10; Terry Myerson said today that the company aims to have Windows 10 on 1 billion machines within the next 2-3 years.

That goal includes laptops, tablets, desktops and even IoT devices which should put into context how the company hopes to achieve this metric. Of course, a pivotal part of this strategy will be to convince Windows 7 users to upgrade to Windows 10 too.

One billion Windows 10 devices is a lofty target but by offering the software as a free upgrade to existing Windows users and the fact that IoT is included in this count, it does not seem un-obtainable. And if the company is able to execute its strategy correctly and land Windows 10 on that many devices, it will surely attract developers to its platform which will help build out its Windows Store.

Microsoft is betting everything on Windows 10 as the OS runs the company"s desktop, tablet, phone and even Xbox platforms. This means that failure is not an option for Microsoft which is likely why they are so confident in their ability to have one billion devices running the OS in the next couple of years.

Only time will tell if Microsoft is able to achieve this goal - but if they can, it will represent a turning point in Windows"s history.
