Microsoft's head researcher Craig Mundie now senior advisor; retiring in 2014

One of Microsoft"s high profile executives is now moving into a different role at the company and will depart Microsoft completely sometime in 2014. Microsoft"s Chief Research and Strategy Officer Craig Mundie, who took on the role in 2006, is now listed asĀ  a "senior advisor" to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

In a recently updated biography of Mundie on Microsoft"s website, it states: "In this role, he works on key strategic projects within the company, as well as with government and business leaders around the world on technology policy, regulation and standards." Mundie first joined Microsoft in 1992 and took on the chief research and strategy officer role at the company in 2006, when Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates announced he would step down from working at Microsoft on a daily basis.

AllThingsD.com reports that the change in Mundie"s roles were announced in an internal email from Ballmer to employees earlier this month. The story adds that Mundie"s former responsibilities, which included heading up Microsoft Research, will now be taken over by the company"s chief technical strategy officer Eric Rudder; Mundie will leave Microsoft entirely in 2014 when he turns 65, according to the memo.

Microsoft just launched a new video series staring Mundie that was designed to give the public more information about the company"s research plans. It"s unknown if the video series will continue with Mundie"s new role at Microsoft.
