Microsoft"s first Surface device launched almost six years ago. Since then, the Surface lineup has branched out into six different product lineups, with the Surface Go being the latest addition to the family. Although some of the products that initially launched were plagued with major battery issues, Microsoft slowly improved this aspect of its Surface devices over the years.
It looks like the tech giant is not content with simply improving battery life, however, as the emergence of a recently published patent, spotted by Windows Latest, points toward potential production of smart batteries with various charging mechanisms for the firm"s Surface devices in the future.
The patent, titled "SMART BATTERY FOR ULTRAFAST CHARGING", was filed in February last year, and describes methods for charging a smart battery in a computing device. Several examples of components to be used with said method have been provided as well, including battery management controllers, computer-readable mediums, charging configurations, battery modules, and more. Additional devices with various modifications might also be deployed, provided they are deemed to be within the scope of implementations mentioned in this patent.
Touching upon the need for such a mechanism, Microsoft stated that more efficient charging of smart batteries has become a requirement. Wireless charging is considered a substitute to other conventional methods such as charging via a power cord. However, the current state of wireless charging is such that a battery cannot be charged faster unless the number of wireless receivers are increased. This is where the new charging mechanism for substantially faster charging comes in.
Bear in mind that even if we do see this technology from Microsoft in action at some point in the future, it might not be limited to Surface devices, as the wording in the published document refers to "computing devices", which include smartphones, tablets, and more as well. Moreover, as is the case with all patents, there is no guarantee this idea is driven forward by the tech giant.
