Microsoft said at the Windows 10 launch event that the company would be releasing the updated operating system in the summer of 2015. Thanks to a note by Kevin Turner at the Credit Suisse Technology Conference, we have a slightly more specific timeline.
Turner said in the note that the company will be releasing Windows 10 in "late summer and early fall." The language is a bit peculiar and we have posted the comment below.
The thing I want to tell you about on Windows 10 is in the Windows 10 timeframe, which we plan to talk about the end-user consumer experiences in the early spring, we"ll have a developer preview and be able to talk to that in depth in the early summer timeframe. And then by next late summer and early fall we"ll be able to bring out this particular OS. That"s the current plan of record.
Based on prior releases, this likely means that the OS will hit RTM in late summer but may not show up in retail goods until the fall.
A few weeks back, Neowin was told that August was the targeted timeline for Windows 10 RTM but we have not been able to find a second source to verify this information. More specifically, Microsoft wants to target the third or fourth week of August for a celebration of Windows 95 which was released 20 years ago on August 24th. Again, this is very early information and should be taken as a rumor at this point but it does align to previous Windows release cycles.
You can read the full statement by Turner at the source link and it does talk a bit more about upcoming releases of Windows 10 but nothing that is new at this point. Expect Microsoft to talk heavily at BUILD 2015, which occurs in late April, about the OS, as this is the company"s largest developer event of the year.
