Microsoft's Surface Laptop Studio brings a new form-factor with powerful internals

Microsoft today announced the Surface Laptop Studio, a brand new form factor in the Surface lineup that combines the Surface Book and Surface Studio models. The device ditches the traditional detachable display from the earlier generation Surface Book models for one that swivels in front to transform into multiple modes, with the display even laying completely flat for drawing on the display. The company calls this device the most powerful Surface ever, thanks to Intel"s 11th-gen H35 chips, RTX graphics, and more.

Starting with the display, the Laptop Studio sports a 14.4-inch PixelSense touch-screen with support for the Surface Pen. It houses a 120Hz high refresh rate panel, just like the Surface Pro 8, and also supports dynamic refresh rates thanks to Windows 11. The "Dynamic Woven Hinge" holds the display and allows for "Laptop" and "Stage" modes. The display also supports the new Slim Pen 2, which can now charge wirelessly under the laptop as it attaches magnetically. The device comes with a glass trackpad that includes haptic feedback, a first for the company.

As for the internals, the device sports Intel"s 11th-gen H35 chips, with the option to spec the device with up to 32GB of RAM and 2TB of storage. Graphics capabilities are managed by Nvidia"s RTX 3050Ti GPU, making it a potent device for heavier workloads, unlike the previous-gen Book or Studio 2. Unsurprisingly, the Laptop Studio comes with Thunderbolt 4 ports, which will let users run multiple 4K displays through a single port. It does, however, retain the Surface Connect port as well, maintaining support for other Surface peripherals like the Dock.

Other features include quad speakers with Dolby Atmos support, similar display features as that of the Pro 8, a 3.5mm audio jack, a 1080p webcam with AI-powered adjustments for better visuals, studio microphones with echo control, and more.

The Surface Laptop Studio is available for pre-order starting today in "select markets" for an asking price starting at $1599.99.
