Microsoft has announced the latest addition to the Surface family, the Surface 3, and if you missed the announcement, you can grab all the details here. One new accessory that is available for the device is the Type cover which, the company said, has been updated for the device.
Microsoft says that the Type cover has "snappier" keys and improved sound dampening which gives the cover a refined feeling over the previous generation cover. They also said that the trackpad has been improved as well.
We will be curious to see how these improvements impact the typing experience with the Surface as our issue was never with the typing action but the feeling that the device was top heavy in our laps which made it less "lapable" than a traditional laptop. Still, any upgrades to the keyboard are welcomed and we will hold our judgment until we get our hands on the device.
It would make complete sense that this updated type cover will eventually make its way to the larger Surface devices too. Seeing as the Surface Pro 4 should be right around the corner, the company may be waiting for that device to be announced before updating the cover for the Pro class.
There are also updated colors too, Microsoft says that the bright blue color is new (it"s a different shade than the existing blue) and there is also a bright red option as well.
The new Type covers will be offered as an accessory for the Surface 3 for $129 and will go on-sale early next month. Our review unit will be arriving late next week and we will be sure to provide a closer look at the updated cover once we are able to get our hands on the peripheral.
