Earlier this year it was revealed that the hit PC sandbox game Minecraft was going to be coming to Google"s Android platform. The Android port would be released first for Sony"s Xperia Play smartphone. While the Android port of Minecraft has yet to be released, the folks at the game"s developer Mojang have now put up a Minecraft-branded version of the Sony Xperia Play up for sale on eBay.
Apparently one or more of these special versions of the phone is going to be given away at Gamescom this week in Germany. However the developer team at Mojang wanted to beat potential eBay sellers to the punch and went ahead and put up their own copy of the Minecraft Xperia Play on sale. Just in case you think that this is being done stickily for money, the eBay listing has revealed that proceeds from the sale will be given to a charity of the development team"s choice.
The Android version of Minecraft is actually being developed by a team outside of Mojang and is scheduled to be released sometime this fall. Sony has a timed exclusive to offer the Minecraft Android port on the Xperia Play first but there"s no word on how long the exclusive will last. An Xbox 360 port of Minecraft, again developed by a third party game developer, is being developed as well for release by the end of 2011. Meanwhile the original PC version is scheduled to finally come out of beta and be officially launched in mid-November.
