Despite a mini-controversy from some gamers about the limitations of its split-screen multiplayer feature, it appears that the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft is already selling like hotcakes. The Major Nelson site is now reporting that the Xbox 360 port of Minecraft, the sandbox game from developer Mojang, has now sold over 1 million copies worldwide since it was launched on Wednesday, May 9th.
These sales figures are on top of the ones the PC version has generated so far. Launched in 2009, Minecraft for the PC has now sold close to 5.9 million copies and could reach the 6 million mark by the end of May. In addition, the Minecraft Pocket edition for Android has sold between 500,000 and 1 million copies since it was launched in 2011.
The Xbox 360 version of the game, which is being sold for 1600 Microsoft points (about $20) has already generated 5.2 million hours in total online gameplay from its users. There have also been 2.4 million hours for its multiplayer mode, along with over 4 million online multiplayer sessions.
Some Xbox 360 gamers have been expressing their disappointment after discovering that Minecraft does not support split-screen multiplayer on a SD television set. So far, it appears Microsoft won"t be offering any refunds to those players.
