Minecraft"s original PC version, the one made with Java, has now sold over 30 million copies over its lifetime. The official number comes through the helpful tracker set up on the game"s website, which crossed the massive milestone a few hours ago.
Released in 2011, this Java-powered PC version by Markus "Notch" Persson came out of the gate after hugely successful alpha and beta periods. Even after Microsoft purchased the game in 2014 and went on to make it the multiplatform sensation it is today - also introducing a Windows 10 version with full cross-platform capabilities -, the Java version has been receiving continues updates.
The colossal modding scene that surrounds the game is certainly also a major factor for keeping the Java version a fan-favorite. These mods can range from small addons that introduce items to total conversion mods.
According to the most recent numbers released by Microsoft, Minecraft had sold over 154 million copies and had above 91 million active players monthly across all platforms back in October 2018. We don"t know how much have these numbers grown since then, but the sandbox"s popularity just doesn"t seem to be waning.
