Minecraft is a worldwide phenomenon, with the title selling over 120 million copies worldwide as of last year. It has become so popular that it has spawned a Telltale game series, a novel, and even an upcoming movie under Warner Bros.
However, those awaiting the release of the potential Hollywood blockbuster (heh) will be disappointed to know that the title has lost its director, and that it has been indefinitely delayed.
TheWrap reports that director and co-writer Rob McElhenney has walked out of the project, though the reasons for this move are currently unknown. Moreover, the script will now be completely re-written by the Nee brothers, with Aaron as the writer and Adam as the director of the upcoming movie.
This also means that the May 24, 2019 date has been pushed back, although a new release date has not yet been announced. Previous reports had stated that the Minecraft movie would be a live-action movie rather than an animated one, with Steve Carell rumored to be attached to the project.
However, no firm details are known yet, and it"s unlikely that we"ll know more soon given that the project is reportedly being rebuilt from scratch.
