One of the biggest and most unlikely successes in the game industry in the past few years has been the rise of Minecraft. The sandbox game, created by Markus "Notch" Persson, slowly began to generate a following on the PC after it was launched in "alpha" form in 2009 and then saw its sales explode in late 2010. Later, ports were made for the Xbox 360, iOS and Android platforms. So far, Minecraft has sold a whopping 17 million total copies.
A documentary film team, 2 Player Productions, followed Notch around as he tried to form a new indie game studio, Mojang, in 2011. On Saturday, their film Minecraft: The Story of Mojang will get its world premiere on Microsoft"s Xbox 360 console.
The Major Nelson website reports that the premiere will stream for free for Xbox Live Gold subscribers in the US and many European countries. European users can watch the film at 7 PM GMT while the US will get to see the movie at 8 pm ET. The premiere will be a one time showing on Xbox Live and it will not be made available for on demand viewing for Xbox Live members afterwards. However, 2 Player Productions will sell a DVD of the movie on Sunday as well as a DRM-free download or streaming rental on the same day.
