Mira Prism is a $99 headset that makes AR content more consumable

Last month, Apple revealed ARKit at WWDC 2017. Although only being available for a short time, the interest has been quite extraordinary, with many examples of works springing up on YouTube. The technology is a new framework that Apple built that will allow developers to produce augmented reality content for the iPad and iPhone. This is all well and good, but the real challenge is trying to get this into a consumable format for everyday use.

It is probably too early to tell what kind of plans Apple has for the platform when it comes to accessories, but a company called Mira has introduced its own headset that will be priced at $99. The device is called Prism and offers an affordable way for users to experience AR environments. The headset works similar to Google"s Cardboard or Samsung"s Gear VR and is simply a head mounted dock for a phone that supports AR.

It certainly looks exciting and full of potential, but the reality is that AR content on mobile phones is currently very limited. For the past year, Lenovo and Asus have attempted to dabble in AR with mobile phones and the response has been tepid at best. If any company has the ability to bring obscure technology to the mainstream, there is a high chance that it will be Apple. The Mira Prism can now be pre-ordered for $99 with shipping to start towards the end of the year.
