While smartphone games can"t quite reach the graphical heights of similar games for the PC and consoles, a few smartphone titles come closer than you might think to replicating the experience that you get on a big screen TV. The Modern Combat games, developed by Gameloft, are an example of this. Clearly inspired by the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series, the Modern Combat titles have been big hits for iOS and Android smartphone.
This week, the latest game in the series, Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour, made its debut for some Windows Phone 8 smartphones. It"s available now from the Windows Store for $6.99 but there"s also a free trial available to download. It"s also the first game in the series to be released for any of Microsoft"s mobile OS platforms.
As you can see in the launch trailer above, the game looks pretty impressive for a smartphone title. It"s also the first game in the Modern Combat series to use the Havok game physics engine for more realistic visual effects. The gameplay is about what you might expect from a run-and-gun first person shooter title and there"s lots of customization choices for both your character and your weapons. There"s also multiplayer modes with leaderboards and support for Xbox Live.
Some Windows Phone 8 owners may not be able to play Modern Combat 4. For one, it"s rated "M" for Mature so it"s not for kids. For another, it"s a one gigabyte download so be sure you have enough storage space available. Finally, some Windows Phone 8 smartphones with small amounts of RAM won"t be able to play the game.
