As we have previously reported, Microsoft will begin to offer people who buy a new Windows 7 PC a way to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $14.99. The program will begin tomorrow, June 2nd, and last until January 31, 2013. Now Microsoft has launched an FAQ with more information about the Windows 8 upgrade offer.
The FAQ states that when Windows 8 Pro becomes available, the people eligible for the upgrade for their new Windows 7 PCs will get a downloadable copy of Windows 8 Pro. If they want a DVD with Windows 8 Pro, they can get one "for an additional cost." Specific pricing was not mentioned. Also, the Windows 8 Media Center Pack is not included as part of the Windows 8 upgrade offer; users who want to have that feature must pay extra to download and install Media Center.
New PCs with Windows 7 Starter are not eligible for the Window 8 upgrade offer but PCs with Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate versions of Windows 7 are able to be a part of the Windows 8 upgrade. Also, there is an limit of five upgrade offers per customer. Microsoft adds, "The offer is for individual customers like students, home users, and enthusiasts. Organizations can be eligible subject to this maximum limit per organization."
Microsoft has already said it will reveal more information on how existing Windows 7 customers can get upgraded to Windows 8 "in the coming months."
