More Surface devices get firmware and driver updates

Microsoft began rolling out the Windows 10 May 2020 Update a couple of weeks ago, and in the follow-up to that release, many Surface devices have been getting firmware and driver updates. First, it was the Surface Pro X and Surface Studio, then a couple of older generations of the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop. Now, the Surface Pro 7, Laptop 3, and Studio 2 - the most recent iteration of each lineup - are all their own sets of updates.

The Surface Pro 7, as well as the Intel variant of the Surface Laptop 3, only have a couple of firmware updates, and they are exactly the same between the two devices. Here"s what"s new:

Windows Update History Name Device Manager Name Version and Update
Surface - Firmware - 8.123.140.0 Surface ME– Firmware

8.123.140.0

  • Addresses unexpected shutdown failure, and improves system stability.
Surface – Firmware – 13.0.1319.2

Surface UEFI – Firmware

13.0.1319.2

  • Addresses unexpected shutdown failure, and improves system stability.

However, if you have the AMD Ryzen-powered version of the Surface Laptop 3, the set of updates will be a bit different, with some additional driver updates in tow:

Windows Update History Name Device Manager Name Version and Update
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. - Display - 26.20.12053.1000 AMD Radeon (TM) Vega 9 Graphics - Display Adapter / AMD Radeon(TM) Vega 11 Graphics – Display adapters

Surface - Monitor - 3.92.139.0 Surface Panel - Monitor

  • Improves device in color performance profile.
Surface - Firmware – 16.106.139.0 Surface System Aggregator – Firmware

16.106.139.0

  • Improves battery life and performance.

For any of these devices, the updates will require you to be running Windows 10 version 1903, or the May 2019 Update, or newer in order to show up on Windows Update. That shouldn"t be a huge challenge since they were released well after the that update was rolled out. This time around, it doesn"t seem like Microsoft is doing a gradual rollout, and the updates should be available to everyone that meets the requirements.

Finally, the Surface Studio 2 has the longest list of updates, but they"re mostly aimed at generic stability improvements. Here"s the full list:

With the Surface Studio 2, the system requirements are slightly different, and you"ll need to be on the Windows 10 October 2018 Update or newer in order for the updates to show up. Just like the remainder of the devices on this list, though, it seems like the updates are available to anyone that meets the requirements and aren"t being rolled out gradually.

If you own any of these devices, you may want to use Windows Update to find all these updates waiting for you. Considering their release lines up closely with the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, they could also bring better compatibility with that release.
