Motorola plans to patch all of its devices from the last two years against Stagefright and has assured that its upcoming devices will be proofed against it from the launch itself.
Researchers recently discovered Stagefright, a major Android security vulnerability that affects an estimated 950 million devices running on the operating system. It has been described as "the worst Android vulnerabilities discovered to date" and affects all versions of the OS from 2.2 to the latest 5.1.1. The vulnerability can potentially allow an attacker to exploit anyone"s Android smartphone by sending a malicious MMS video message.
Motorola, which ships nearly stock Android on its devices has now revealed that Google briefed the company about the vulnerability in June and has been working on security patches for its devices since then. The company has not yet come across any devices that have been hijacked using Stagefright but is hard at work to prevent any such occurrence in the near future.
The entire portfolio of Motorola devices from the last two years is expected to get the security patch against Stagefright and the recently announced Moto X Style and X Play will already be patched before shipping. Moto G (3rd gen) will receive the update soon as it has already begun shipping in a few countries.
Samsung and LG have committed to regular security updates for their devices in the wake of recently discovered Android security vulnerabilities and Motorola might also follow them as the OS continues to grow in popularity.
