Earlier this week, Microsoft and Nokia sent out a joint press announcement inviting members of the media to a event that will be held on September 5th in New York City. Now, Motorola (and by association its new parent company Google) have also revealed they will be holding an event on the same day and in the same city.
Venture Beat reports that the invite they received simply said, "Motorola: On Display. Join us for the day"s main event." That does sound like Motorola is telling the invited press that their press event will be "better" than Microsoft and Nokia"s conference.
There"s no other word on what might be shown by Motorola, although the article speculates that the "On Display" term could mean that we could see a new tablet from the company. The previously released Android-based Motorola Xoom tablets have not been all that successful, at least in terms of sales.
The press invite comes just a few days after Google announced that it would lay off 20 percent of Motorola"s team members, along with closing 94 of its offices worldwide. Google officially closed the deal on the $12.5 billion acquisition of the smartphone and tablet company in May.
