Motorola is reportedly working on a 5G version of the razr

Motorola"s new razr caught headlines last year, making a foldable Android phone as a new take on the iconic 2004 flip phone. While pre-orders for the handset don"t start for another two days, there are already rumors of a new one.

According to a report from Chinese site Blog of Mobile, Motorola is working on a 5G razr. Of course, that doesn"t just mean a new cellular radio and new antennas; it means that the company will have to use a new chipset. This will likely be one of Qualcomm"s new SoCs, like the Snapdragon 765, something that Motorola committed to using at Snapdragon Technology Summit. In fact, it committed to using the Snapdragon 865 in a flagship phone in 2020 as well.

One of the criticisms of the $1,500 razr is that it is a mid-range device. It packs a Snapdragon 710 chipset, a sub-FHD display, and a single-lens camera. Obviously, the selling point is the foldable OLED display, and of course, nostalgia.

According to the report, we should see this new 5G razr this year; however, it"s not clear if it will ever be released outside of China.
