While Motorola already said that it would not release a new smartwatch in 2016, it seems that the Lenovo-owned company has no plans for a new Moto 360 at all, as it"s pulling out of the wearable market. The original Moto 360 was shown off onstage when Google first announced Android Wear, but the firm has confirmed to The Verge that it will not be launching a new one alongside Google"s upcoming Android Wear 2.0.
Shakil Barkat, head of global product development at Motorola, said that the firm doesn"t "see enough pull in the market to put [a new smartwatch] out at this time. Wearables do not have broad enough appeal for us to continue to build on it year after year."
It"s a fair enough point, as Android Wear launched two and a half years ago at Google"s I/O developer conference, and Apple"s Watch has been available since April 2015; however, smartwatches simply haven"t picked up the kind of momentum that other sectors of the tech industry have.
Moto says that if the technology and interest in wearables changes, the company may revisit the decision, but in the meantime, no wearables will be included in the firm"s annual device roadmaps.
