It"s been a while since Motorola made a flagship smartphone. In fact, the last one that used a chipset from Qualcomm"s premium Snapdragon 8 series was the Moto Z2 Force with the Snapdragon 835. The Moto Z3 had the same chipset, and then the Z4 was decidedly mid-range. The new razr has a Snapdragon 710, despite flagship features and pricing.
The good news is that Motorola says it"s getting back into premium. A representative from the company took the stage at Qualcomm"s Snapdragon Technology Summit confirmed that the company is not only committed to using the flagship Snapdragon 865 that was announced today, but also the high-end Snapdragon 765.
Naturally, these devices are coming next year, specifically in the first half. This also means that Motorola is committed to 5G, which is no surprise. Motorola has traditionally been a pioneer in wireless technology, and it was one of the first to do 5G. In fact, the push for an affordable 5G handset was a big reason why the company stopped using premium chipsets in the Moto Z series.
As Motorola said today, there"s lots of exciting news coming in 2020. If this year"s razr is a sign of things to come, it should indeed be exciting.
