Motorola's Xoom tablet to get 4G LTE update in next week

The long awaited 4G LTE update for owners of Motorola"s Android-based Xoom tablet from Verizon Wireless may finally be almost ready.

Droid Life is reporting that according to an email that was sent out to Xoom owners this week, the LTE update will be made available for business and government users of the tablet first. This will be a kind of pilot program for upgrading the tablet before Motorola opens it up to the general public. That should happen sometime in September.

This 4G LTE update won"t be a simple software download and program install. People will need to send their Xoom tablets to Motorola in a special shipping box where the update will be handled as a hardware upgrade. For those business and government users of the Xoom, the expected turnaround time should be fairly brief, around three business days.

The upgrade will be free for all Xoom owners and all owners of the Xoom who want to upgrade to the LTE version should back up any essential data they have on the tablet or reset the Xoom back to its original software version when they first opened the tablet before they send the device back to Motorola.

The Xoom tablet, launched back in February 2011, was the first Android-based device that used the 3.0, or Honeycomb, version of Google"s operating system. It has Nvidia"s Tegra 2 dual core processor, a 10.1 inch screen, 32 GB of storage, a 5 megapixel rear camera, a 2 megapixel front camera and more.
