Mozilla has recently begun work on a new settings tab for altering Firefox"s performance so that users can configure the browser to work better based on their hardware specs. Right now, the project is in its early stages but a mockup has been released to give an idea about the settings that"ll be available in the menu.
You may recall that Firefox began shipping with a multi-process architecture to boost stability and security. The feature is still rolling out due to incompatible add-ons, but will be enabled for everyone in an upcoming release. With the new performance tab, Mozilla will give users more control over the feature.
The options in the performance tab will include:
- Optimise Firefox – This will disable all of your add-ons.
- There"ll be a checkbox to use the recommended performance settings.
- An option to adjust the number of content processes, the mockup shows a slider with the numbers 1-7.
- The option to disable UI animations.
- The option to disable page prefetching.
Users who notice a significant increase in RAM usage after the introduction of the multi-process architecture will be able to adjust the number of content processes to restrict how much RAM is used, to the detriment of the browser"s overall stability.
No clear date has been set as the deadline of this feature"s rollout, however, it"ll likely be ready for the Photon UI update, as the bug tracker says this "bug" is a blocker for the "photon-preferences" refresh.
