Mozilla has launched Firefox 95 bringing several security and performance improvements such as RLBox and Site Isolation. There also some bug fixes that improve the speed of content process startup on macOS and memory allocation on all platforms.
The major change in Firefox 95 is RLBox, which we discussed yesterday. This leverages WebAssembly to harden Firefox against security vulnerabilities in third-party libraries. RLBox did ship to Linux and Mac users on desktop a while ago but now it’s available on all platforms across desktop and mobile.
On macOS, Firefox 95 comes with reduced CPU usage which should improve the stability of your Mac. Additionally, the browser’s power usage on macOS has been reduced when software-decoded videos are played, especially in fullscreen. If you access sites like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, you should see reduced power usage thanks to this change.
RLBox is not the only security enhancement in Firefox 95, Mozilla says it has enabled Site Isolation for all users which helps protect against side-channel attacks like Spectre.
Finally, if you use Picture-in-Picture on video streaming websites, it’s now possible to move the button to the other side of the video by looking for the new context menu option, Move Picture-in-Picture Toggle to Left (Right) Side.
If you already run Firefox, your browser should automatically update in the coming days. If you don’t have it yet, head to the Microsoft Store now to install it or grab it from Mozilla’s website.
