NBA Playgrounds; the arcade style basketball game that launched on Xbox One, PC, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch has just hit 500,000 unit sales. According to the developer, due to the success of the game, it will release more free content in the future. CEO of the studio, Matt Karch described the game as a "labor of love" amongst other things in a comment to the success of the game:
“NBA Playgrounds has been a labor of love for us at Saber, so it’s hugely gratifying to see the game strike a chord. Its success has paved the way for us to consider creating other arcade-style sports titles. We’ve worked tirelessly since release to refine the game and deliver the free content we promised, and we’re going to keep supporting it. I want to thank the community for their ongoing feedback, specifically players on Switch, who had to wait so long for the full experience they deserve.”
Saber Interactive, announced in a press release today that it will add 33 new characters to the lineup, beyond the multiple free updates that the studio has already rolled out. These new "stars" will include J.R. Smith, Chris Paul, Baron Davis and Tim Duncan. On top of that, the developer will add old-school legends Jerry West and Elgin Baylor, and even some gaming YouTubers like Agent 00 and Shake4ndBake.
Beyond these, the studio will update the game to reduce the chance of duplicate players being available to gamers, creating a more realistic lineup in each game. The developer will also update the online capability for a more fluid gaming experience, and faster matchmaking.
NBA Playgrounds is currently available for download and will set you back $19.99 on your platform of choice.
