On September 1st, the data from Net Applications showed that Windows 7 finally went ahead of Windows XP in terms of worldwide PC operating system market share. Today, the newly updated results show that Windows 7 adoption is taking off even faster.
The new results show Windows 7 with a 44.01 percent market share for September, compared to just 42.76 percent in August. Windows XP went down to 41.23 percent in September, compared to 42.52 percent from August. That means that Windows 7 adoption went up by well over a percentage point in just a month, while the use of Windows XP went down by over a full percentage point in the same time period.
This new data could show that businesses with lots of PCs are finally ditching Windows XP en masse for Windows 7. Microsoft has been strongly urging businesses to do exactly that for the past year or so, as official support for Windows XP is scheduled to end from the company in April 2014.
Windows Vista is still a distant third in these latest OS market share stats with 6.05 percent. Net Applications shows that Windows 8 is now being used by 0.33 percent of all PCs running in the world. That percentage should skyrocket after October 26th, when it will be released to the general public.
