Net Spam Victim Wins Landmark Case

Spam victim Nigel Roberts has won a landmark victory, successfully suing Media Logistics UK who had spammed him with junk mail. Under new EU laws companies can be sued for sending unwanted e-mails.

Mr Roberts, who runs an internet business was paid £270 in an out of court settlement. He had limited his claim to under £300 so that he could qualify to file as a small claim. He says "This may be a tiny victory but perhaps now spammers will begin to realise that people don"t have to put up with their e-mail inboxes being filled with unwanted junk."

Spam is a common problem among internet users, and Mr Roberts, who is studying for a Law degree, has decided to set out a series of legal templates for those who want to use the legal system to stop spam. He told The Register that it will be a "DIY spam self-defence kit". Mr Roberts is hoping that even everyday internet users will be able to sue companies that sent unsolicited email.
