A new analysis by the password breach awareness website, Scattered Secrets, had revealed that the Dutch are about as bad as the rest of the world at picking strong and secure passwords. While most tech aficionados know to use a memorable phrase or long obscure characters stored in a locker as their password, a lot of people prefer something easy to remember, for use on every single online service – leaving them wide open for trouble.
Unlike passwords in the U.S. or the UK, which tend to be numerical or contain English words, what’s unique with the Dutch list is that several of the top ten entries are Dutch variants of words like ‘welcome’ and ‘password’. The analysis also found that football teams are popular passwords, with ‘feyenoord’ coming in 15th place and ‘ajax’ in 30th. Place names such as ‘amsterdam’ and Rotterdam were found in the top 25 too.
The top ten hacked Dutch passwords are:
- 123456
- qwerty
- 123456789
- welkom
- 12345
- password
- welkom01
- wachtwoord
- 1234
- 12345678
If you can see your password, or similar, in the list above it’s probably a good time to start looking into using a strong password generator and password manager to store those complicated passwords so you don’t have to remember them. There are plenty of free password managers out there if you do some research but there are also paid services such as Keeper Password Manager which is still running a 33% discount which you can take advantage of.
