Microsoft is breaking out the big holiday guns this week in a new TV and online advertising campaign for its Bing search service. The Associated Press (via Yahoo) reports that Microsoft has bought the rights to use the characters in the classic TV animated special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer for use in their new Bing TV commercials.
There will be four ads in the new campaign and all of them will be done in the stop motion animation style of the original 1964 TV special (based on the classic song of the same name). Microsoft will run the ads during select spots on several television shows , although not during the actual TV broadcast of the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer special itself. The new ads will also be shown in select movie theaters and online at Microsoft"s Bing Originals web site starting today. One of the ads shows characters from the TV special using Bing to find a vacation getaway and another shows Bumble the Abominable Snowman trying to find new ideas for a roar he can use via Bing.
Microsoft continues to use Bing TV ads in an effort to market its Internet search services against Google, which has some TV ads of its own that it will be running this holiday season. Will using Rudolph and his friends turn out to be a good idea? Stay tuned.
