Motorola is expanding its tablet products to include two new devices under a new brand name, the Droid Xyboard. News.com reports that a 10 inch and an eight inch version of the Droid Xyboard will be released before the end of 2011. The 10 inch verson is designed for business users and will come with a stylus while the eight inch version is being made as a multi-media device.
Both devices will apparently be sold overseas as the Xoom 2, the successor to Motorola"s original Xoom tablet. The new Droid Xyboard tablets have a thinner design than the Xoom. Both the 10 and eight inch versions share similar hardware specs, including Google"s Android 3.2 operating system. Both also have a 1.2 GHz dual core processor along with 1 GB of RAM, a five megapixel rear view camera and a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera.
The fact that these new tablets are dropping the Xoom name for their US versions in favor of the popular Droid branding likely means that Motorola sees the Xoom name as a hindrance in the marketplace. Indeed, Motorola admitted in October that the company only shipped 100,000 units of the original Xoom in the third quarter of 2011. Pricing for the new Droid Xyboard tablets have yet to be announced.
