New renders show off Samsung's Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+

During the past week, there have been a few leaks regarding the Galaxy S9 but when it comes to reliability of this information, you just can"t be certain. Luckily, Evan Blass, who has been known in the past to be an extremely reliable, has revealed new renders of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.

As you can see from the image, the devices look similar to last year"s models, but it does have some tiny differences like the addition of what looks like either sensors or cameras in the top bezel. As for specifications, you can expect it to be powered by the top of the line Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and in other regions, it will harness Samsung"s Exynos 9810. There will be a bit of change this year with the higher end model, the Galaxy S9+, having 6GB RAM, while the standard offering, the Galaxy S9 arriving with 4GB RAM.

While a majority of the components sourced by phone manufacturers are similar, what really differentiates a good phone from a great phone over the past couple years has been its camera. Despite offering poor cameras in its previous handsets, Google took the industry by storm with its Pixel and Pixel XL. A year later, the firm has continued to set the benchmark with its Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. Samsung is aware of this and it is clearly aiming to dethrone Google if its Unpacked event slogan of "The Camera. Reimagined." is any indication.

According to Blass, the camera in the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will pack a sensor that will feature a mechanical adjustment that can switch between two apertures, f/1.5 and f/2.4. The Galaxy S9+ will take things a step further with the addition of a second 12MP camera sensor with a fixed aperture. Along with the hardware, Samsung will also offer software additions like a mode called “super slow-mo” where any kind of rapid motion will trigger automatic recording at 480fps recording at 720p. The company will also be using optical image stabilization (OIS) to steady shots, which could be dubbed "Super Speed Dual Pixel". Along with changes to the camera, the firm will also relocate the controversial fingerprint reader from last year and have it aligned underneath the camera.

While there were some early rumors that Samsung would announce its next handsets at CES 2018, this never happened, and the firm has more recently confirmed that it will debut the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. In previous years, MWC has been a crowded affair, with Samsung sharing the stage with many of its competitors, but this year, it will be front and center, as HTC, LG, and Huawei have all bowed out of the event. The Unpacked event is scheduled for February 25 and it is speculated that the handsets will be made available through retail channels a few weeks later starting on March 16.
